• Castle Geyser Erupts

Ordinarily, when Yellowstone National Park’s Castle Geyser erupts at night, it just creates a dark cloud of mist against the starry sky. In this spectacular time exposure image, taken on 09/20/14, the steamy plume was “painted” with a flashlight so that it glowed beneath the Wyoming stars, as a gentle breeze carried the rising steam away. The stars of the Big Dipper are just under the plume and the stars of the Little Dipper are just above. The North Star, Polaris, is directly over the thermal vent.
