When the "Dog Star" Sirius breaks over the mountains, it is as if a miniature sun has risen, casting faint, flickering shadows across the snow. In this wintry scene, the rotation of the Earth created the star streaks in this 20 minute exposure, then a 25 second exposure placed a star dot at the end of each trail. Sirius is the brightest star visible in Earth's nighttime sky and one of the closest stars to our solar system. The mountains in this image are those surrounding Trout Lake near Telluride, CO, USA.
